Caramel Rice Krispies Treats are so delicious! My cute daughter-in-law shared this amazing recipe from her grandma and I wish that I would have had it sooner. If you are looking for something special this holiday season, why not make a batch of Caramel Rice Krispies Treats?
These Caramel Rice Krispies Treats are not just your ordinary Rice Krispies treats; they are much more. They are a way to let friends and neighbors know that you really care about them. The only thing that you want to remember is to save some for the neighbors. Ha ha.
What Ingredients Do I Need For Caramel Rice Krispies Treats?
Here’s a list of ingredients you’ll need to make these treats (scroll down for the full recipe):
- Caramel squares
- Butter
- Sweetened condensed milk
- Marshmallows
- Rice Krispies Cereal
Optional:
- Mini m & m’s
- Candy canes
- Reese’s peanut butter cups (chopped)
- Mini chocolate chips
How Do I Make Caramel Rice Krispies Treats?
Here’s the simple steps you’ll follow to make these treats (scroll down for the full recipe):
- Prepare a 9″ x 13″ baking dish by spraying with cooking spray, and set it aside.
- In large pan, place the butter and the unwrapped caramels.
- Melt over medium heat until the two combine, and become nice and smooth.
- Then add the sweetened condensed milk and stir to combine again.
- Place the marshmallows in a large bowl.
- Pour the caramel mixture over the top of the marshmallows and stir them until they are completely melted.
- Then add the Rice Krispies cereal and coat the cereal.
- Next place the mixture into the prepared pan, and allow it to cool.
- Cut into squares.
How Do I Keep Rice Krispies Treats Soft?
- Do not use old, hard marshmallows. Recently purchased marshmallows work best.
- Make sure to add butter. The marshmallow-butter combination helps keep the treats soft and chewy, so don’t leave it out.
- Don’t chill in the refrigerator. Even if you want them to set up quickly; this just dries the marshmallow treats out more quickly.
- Store in an airtight container on the counter top.
Can I Use Homemade Caramels in This Recipe?
- Yes, it is totally fine to use homemade caramels in Caramel Rice Krispies Treats.
- I usually use store bought Kraft Caramels for this recipe because it is so much faster.
- Either way they turn out great.
Tips and Tricks For Caramel Rice Krispies Treats?
- You can either stir your marshmallows until they are dissolved, or just leave a few chunks of marshmallows not melted, giving the treats a little different texture.
- It is fun to make these in little muffin cups (grease them so they don’t stick) and use a small cookie scoop to pack the mixture in.
- If you want to make your treats more festive, you might want to add some sprinkles.
- Resist the urge to cut them before they’re fully cooled, or they can become crumbly.

There was definitely too much liquid for the treats. Followed recipe exactly! Don’t really understand why it needed the sweetened condensed milk.
Sorry that it didn’t work out for you. This recipe is from my daughter-in-laws grandma they like their caramel. You can always add more cereal. Thank you for giving it a try!
I had the same problem. I might skimp on the milk next time and add more cereal.
The extra liquid is making the cereal soggy.
We do love ours with a lot of caramel, and we have a larger family so it doesn’t last very long around here. Also one could try making a half of batch. Thanks for giving it a try!:)
How much is a cube of butter? Most recipes call for a stick of butter or a tablespoon or a half cup etc.
A cube of butter is 1/2 cup butter. Thank you for asking.
Thank you for that info. I want to make these very soon.
I’m pretty sure that you will be glad that you made them, once you do. Thank you for leaving a comment!
I LOVE anything CARAMEL! So I had to make this recipe!! I don’t understand why condensed milk was needed ?♀️ but I followed the recipe to the T. I found that the condensed milk made them way to sweet and over powered the caramel taste!! I will definitely make them again, but I think next time I will not use the condensed milk.
It is a really good recipe, it just was too sweet for me!
Thank you for checking it out! This is a recipe from my cute daughter-in-laws grandma. I find the older I get I too do not like things as sweet. I will have to try it without the condensed milk. But for some people, the ooey and gooier the better! Thank you for the great tip! 🙂
I didn’t have enough caramels as called for in the recipe, but I used what I had (probably 20 kraft caramels) it’s fantastic and yes way too sweet, but I love it anyway. I will try it again, but with about 1/2 the sweetened condensed milk. The sweetened condensed milk keeps the cereal from drying out. I like that! Thanks
That sounds like a great idea. Thank you for giving them a try. Please let us know how they turn out next time and maybe I will try 1/2 the milk as well. Have a wonderful week!:)
