- What kind of onion goes good with potatoes? I like to use a purple sweet one, but any are fantastic.
- People love to add bacon, but it is best to cook the bacon a little before you start your potatoes. Brown the bacon for a few minutes before adding the potatoes.

Total Time
1 hour 5 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 large potato per person
- 1 onion, sliced
- salt
- pepper
- seasoning salt
- 1/2 cup butter (sliced) *can use bacon grease in place of the butter
- 1/4 cup apple juice, water, or Sprite
- 1 1/2 - 2 cups grated cheese
Instructions
- Scrub and peel the potatoes. 13 lbs will serve about 25 people
- Slice the potatoes in even slices. You can use a food processor or a hand slicer, or I have even used a knife when camping.
- Place a few slices of butter in the bottom of the dutch oven, or 1/4 cup bacon grease if desired
- (makes for a great flavor if you like bacon).
- Start layering the potatoes. I used a 10" dutch oven and I used about 15-20 potatoes because they weren't very big.
- Layer about 1/4 of the dutch oven with potatoes and 1/4 of the onion.
- Sprinkle the potatoes with salt and pepper and just about 1/8 teaspoon of seasoning salt.
- Repeat the layers 2-3 more times. I add some of the butter in between the layers. Just a nice thin sliver of butter works well. I use it just as it has come out of the refrigerator, that makes it easier to slice.
- I also like to add about 1/4 cup of liquid, like water, apple juice or Sprite.
- Place in an oven that has been preheated to 350 degrees. We cooked ours on the Trager for 55 minutes.
- Make sure that your dutch oven is full because it will cook down about 1/3.
