Tips and Tricks For Easy Apple Crumble Pie:

  • Use an apple that holds up well, like Granny smith.
  • Always peel your apples for pie as the skin can become tough and chewy after it is baked.
  • Don’t skimp on the apples, as they’ll shrink a little as they bake.
  • Make sure that your crumble topping has been mixed thoroughly. If it is powdery, it hasn’t been mixed enough. Mix it together with your hands until bigger crumbs form.
  • If you notice the topping starts to brown too early, tent the pie or cover it loosely with a piece of aluminum foil.
  • Use a nice deep dish pie plate and always set the pie plate on a baking sheet to bake. This will catch any drips or spills should your pie bubble over!
  • If there is extra juice, it will thicken the pie as it cools.
  • You can leave this pie out for up to 2 days, but I suggest that you put it in the fridge to help make it last up to 4-5 days.

Ingredients

  • 1 (9") pie crust

Apple Filling:

  • 6-8 tart apples, (like Granny Smith)
  • 1/3 cup white sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 - 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (if you are a fan of nutmeg, add up to 1/3 teaspoon)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice

Crumble Topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup butter, chilled and cubed (about 10 little cubes)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.

Apple Filling:

  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin slices and place in a bowl. I like using my apple peeler/corer/slicer for this, or just slice the apples about 1/8" - 1/4" thick.
  2. In a different bowl, place the sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon juice, and mix to combine.
  3. Pour the mixture over the apples and coat the apples until all the mixture is used.
  4. Next layer the apple slices into a pie shell (Either frozen, or homemade crust) and place this on a baking sheet.

Crumble Topping:

  1. Place the flour, sugars, cinnamon, and the butter in a medium bowl. Using a fork or a pastry blender, blend the mixture together leaving little lumps in it.
  2. Place the topping over the apples with your hands, slightly pat the topping so that it sticks to the apple mixture.
  3. Bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes, then reduce the heat to 375 degrees for 45-55 minutes longer.
  4. With a meat thermometer or fork, poke the center of the pie to see if the apples are soft and tender.
  5. Allow the pie to cool slightly or serve at room temperature.
