How Do I Make Old Fashioned Chocolate Pie?

Here’s the simple steps you’ll follow to make this Pie (scroll down for the full recipe):

  • Prepare a crust, by making your own, using a graham cracker crust, or using a frozen pie crust.
  • In a medium bowl, place the flour, cocoa, and the sugar, then take a whisk and whisk them together removing any lumps.
  • Then I like to take this mixture and place it into my double boiler pan.
  • Next you will add the egg yolks only.
  • Place the double boiler over medium heat.
  • Add 1/2 of the milk to the mixture and stir it well.
  • Then add the rest of the milk, stirring constantly and cooking the mixture over medium heat until it becomes thick. This step can take up to 15-20 minutes depending on your stove.
  • When the mixture has thickened, remove it from the heat and add the butter and the vanilla extract. Incorporate them in very well.
  • Place the mixture into your pie crust that is completely cooled, and cover with plastic wrap.
  • Allow the mixture to cool for at least 6 hours, or over night.
  • Garnish your pie with shaved chocolate, a sprinkle of cocoa, whipped cream or whipped topping.

Why Did My Chocolate Pie Turn Out Runny?

  • The most likely reason is that you didn’t cook the filling long enough.
  • Also, make sure that you measure the correct amount of flour to add to the filling.

How Do I Know When My Chocolate Pie Is Done?

  • After the filling begins to thicken in the pan, let it cook a little more and then remove it from the pan, as it will be done at this point.
  • It will also thicken a little more as it cools.

Variations for Old Fashioned Chocolate Pie:

  • I like to use a graham cracker crust or a regular pie crust, however if you are a huge chocolate fan, use an Oreo crust and you will love it.
  • Garnish with shaved chocolate, mini chocolate chips, whipped cream or whipped topping, sprinkles of cocoa powder.
