What Are Dumplings?

  • Dumplings are a broad class of dishes that consist of pieces of cooked dough, often wrapped around a filling.

Can I Use Canned Peaches Instead of Fresh Peaches?

  • Yes! I’ve used canned peaches many times, because fresh peaches are not available in the winter time here.
  • The peaches break down a little more, but the dumplings are still really good!
  • Note that I prefer fresh peaches if I can get them.

What Purpose Does the Soda Have in This Recipe?

  • The soda adds necessary carbonation – do not eliminate it, or these dumplings will not turn out right.
  • By pouring it around the edges of the pan, it creates moisture to cook the dumplings and an amazing crust on the crescent rolls while baking.
  • It also boils down and contributes to the gooey sauce that this dumpling dish has.
  • 7-Up, Sprite, or Mountain Dew will also work in this recipe in place of Fresca. I feel that Fresca gives the dumplings a hint of citrus flavor. Plus Fresca has zero calories, so I feel that that is a plus too.
