Puff Pastry Christmas Tree is a great appetizer to put together for this busy time of year. We love the cute shape of the Christmas tree and you can also add red and green sugar or any red and green sprinkles would be fun for this time of year. You can also put Nutella in the center, or I have also seen others make it more like a pizza using pizza sauce, meat, and the toppings that you enjoy.
We hope this recipe will make your holidays a little easier and more enjoyable!

How Do I Make Puff Pastry Christmas Tree?
Here’s the simple steps you’ll follow to make this Pastry (scroll down for the full recipe):
- Using a sharp knife, cut both of the puff pastry sheets along each side, making it the shape of a Christmas tree.
- Cut a small amount along the bottom leaving about 1 1/2 – 2 inches to make a stem.
- Using a cookie cutter, use some of the scraps and make a star X 2. I cut mine on the baking sheet, that way you don’t have to transfer it.
- Remove the top puff pastry and then cover the bottom one with Nutella, as well as the star.
- Place the top puff pastry on the Nutella and pinch the sides together. Do the same with the star and place it atop the tree.
- I placed a ruler down the center, then cut about 1″ cuts up to the ruler on both sides, leaving the center not cut.
- Twist each longer strip a couple of times, and the shorter ones, one time.
- Mix the egg yolk and water together with a fork, then using a pastry brush, brush over the pastry.
- Bake for 25 – 30 minutes at 400 degrees, checking it at about 20 minutes because each oven is different. The center, when checked with a thermometer should be at about 195 – 200 degrees, and the tree will be golden brown.
- Wait 4 – 5 minutes then brush with melted butter.
- Mix the sugar and cinnamon together then sprinkle on the tree, or use colored sugar, and enjoy.
Where Can I Find Puff Pastry?
- In the freezer section at your grocery store.
Can I Use a Filling Other Than Nutella?
- You can use any spread that you’d like, be as creative as you’d like.
- Some suggestions include: Peanut butter, almond butter, cookie butter, or oat butter.
- Or for a savory option use: marinara, spinach or cheese dip.
How Do I Store my Pastry Christmas Tree?
- Store these puff pastries in an airtight container on the counter and enjoy within 1-2 days
- Or refrigerate and enjoy within 2-3 days.
- Reheat in the microwave for best results.
Tips on Working with Puff Pastry
- Keep the puff pastry chilled. Don’t take it out of the fridge until after you have all the other ingredients ready. It is sticky and hard to work with when warm.
- If your puff pastry becomes too soft and sticky, just put it in the fridge for 10 minutes. Sprinkling the pastry with flour while rolling it out also helps.
- If using frozen puff pastry, it‘s better to thaw it in the fridge overnight instead of quickly thawing it on the counter as it can be prone to breaking.
