Homemade Coconut Cream Pie is such a treat. and it is perfect for your Thanksgiving table. Better yet, make it any time of the year. It is a pretty easy pie to make and your family will think that you have been spending all day in the kitchen, cooking over a hot stove.
I have had other coconut cream pies, but this is my favorite recipe. It comes together fairly quick and who doesn’t like that?
What Ingredients Do I Need For Homemade Coconut Cream Pie?

- Sugar
- Flour
- Salt
- Milk
- Egg yolks
- Butter
- Vanilla extract
- Sweetened flaked coconut
- 9″ baked pie crust or graham cracker crust
How Do I Make Homemade Coconut Cream Pie?
Here’s the simple steps you’ll follow to make this Pie (scroll down for the full recipe):
- Combine the sugar, flour, and the salt.
- Slowly pour in the milk.
- Cook in a medium sauce pan over medium heat until the mixture boils and thickens, then cook it for 2 minutes.
- Remove the pan from the heat and slowly add the slightly beaten egg yolks.
- Cook for an additional 2 minutes.
- Remove from the heat and add the butter and vanilla extract.
- Cool at room temperature.
- Add the coconut, and stir to mix.
- Place the mixture into the pie crust and place in the refrigerator.
- If desired, garnish with whipping cream, whipped topping, and toasted coconut.
Variations For This Homemade Coconut Cream Pie:
This Basic Recipe Can Be Used to Make Several Other Kinds of Pie.
Banana:
- You can leave out the coconut and make this into a banana cream pie.
- Just stir in 2 sliced bananas instead of the coconut.
Peach:
- Omit the coconut.
- For peach cream pie, arrange 1 1/2 cups sliced peaches over the filling.
- Sprinkle with 3 Tablespoons confectioner’s sugar, or top it off with whipped cream or whipped topping.
Strawberry:
- Omit the coconut.
- For strawberry cream pie, arrange 1 1/2 cups sliced strawberries over the filling.
- Sprinkle with 3 Tablespoons confectioner’s sugar, or top it off with whipped cream or whipped topping.
- The biggest difference is that Custard Pie has a baked filling, and Cream Pie does not.
- Coconut Cream Pie is made with an egg and milk/cream custard, but it’s cooked on the stove and chilled until set.
- Coconut Custard Pie is made with an egg and milk/cream custard that sets up and thickens in the oven.
